Dogfish Head Brewery “Sixty-One” Review
Another day of Shark Week means another Dogfish Head review! Picked up this single bottle of “Sixty-One” from Total Wine & More. It’s an American IPA with 6.5% alcohol. Let the rating begin: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Pours with a half a finger’s worth of white foam that dissipates into a quarter’s worth within 30 seconds. The color is strange and I can only describe it as a purply copper color. Has moderate lacing and an abundance of bubbles (leaves me wondering why the head isn’t bigger). Has very strong fruit aromas–consisting of mango, red grape, and grapefruit–that combine with mild floral and citrus hop aromas and a hint of sour yeast. Initial taste is of mild fruit and sour yeast flavors. Mild floral hop flavors with a hint of smokey flavors enter immediately after the initial flavors. Mild citrus hop flavors along with a hint of earthy yeast flavors enter lastly in this symphony of flavors that is this beer as all previous flavors persist in strength except for fruit flavors, which disappear, and sour yeast flavors, which grow from mild to strong. Light-bodied, subtly carbonated, with a dry finish that clings to the back of the throat. I have to say that this is an underrated beer. This had a very complex taste that my nose could have never guessed. I loved the challenge in deciphering what was occurring on my palate.
OVERALL RATING: 3.99 out of 5.
