Canary In a Kolsch Mine Review

🗣 This Kölsch-style Ale is an homage to the Rhine-Ruhr region of Cologne, Germany, where it originated. This area was known for coal mining, and canaries were used in the mines to detect the presence of carbon monoxide. At a time when detectors were not yet invented, the bird’s rapid breathing rate, small size and high metabolism made them useful because they would succumb to poisoning sooner than the miners, thereby serving as a signal and giving the miners time to act or escape.

On a less grim and more bird-friendly note, this brew is quite good! It’s crisp and refreshing with a sweet corn flavour.

🏁 Crisp finish with a soft sweet note.
