Barrel 437 (Spontaneous Grape Ale) Review

🗣 Barrel 437 is a single barrel Spontaneous Grape Ale and a collaboration with Still Fields, a brewery started by a former Bellwoods brewer.

After a night in the coolship, the wort was added to freshly pressed Cab Franc skins, combining their wild yeast. This hybrid elixir was then fermented and aged in a single neutral French oak puncheon.

The resulting beer is a cross between a spontaneous beer and natural wine that is as flavourful as it is complex.

🖍 Translucent copper-coloured body with a small frothy head that evaporates almost instantly.
👄 Sharply carbonated light-to-medium body
👅 Tart and bittersweet notes of grapefruit rind, green pepper and strawberry jam with firm acidity and soft brett.
🏁 Tart and crisp finish with some residual tangy acidity.
